How to Increase the Lifespan of Your Brakes

With every car comes necessary maintenance, but how well it is cared for determines how quickly it may need attention. Surely the transmission goes on its own time, but other parts are at will of the driver. Like the car’s interior, the wheels and brakes are parts that the owner is responsible for maintaining properly.

At Rob’s Auto Center, our team of professionals is here to help you with any maintenance, repair, or towing services needed! We have been around for many years and are skilled and knowledgeable experts in all things auto. Follow this list of best practices to help your brakes last longer.

Slow Down

Driving fast can seem necessary when you’re in a rush — it’s not! Not only is speeding dangerous for everyone on the road, but it’s tough on your breaks as well. When driving fast, your car’s braking system can take longer to react. In fact, your brakes are worn down quicker in order to get you to come to a complete stop. With that in mind, driving the speed limit is not only safer for you and those around you but for the sake of your brakes.

No Tailgating

It’s never a good idea to tailgate another vehicle. You’re more likely to slam on your brakes when there’s not enough space to slow down between yourself and the car in front of you. Rather than straining your brakes, do not drive directly behind others. The distance between you and the car in front of you should be determined by your speed. The faster you are going, the more distance you would need to safely brake. This also lessens your chances of accidents.

Coast It

In some situations, there’s the opportunity to coast rather than come to a complete stop. Certainly, this is a judgment call at best, but since it does not ask as much of the brakes, it helps elongate their lifespan. Just make sure you have the room to coast or slow down before doing so. Otherwise, use your brakes as needed to stay safe on the road.

Clean Out Your Car

Take a look around the interior of your car and inside your trunk. If you have a lot of stuff that you don’t need in there, remove it. Extra weight in your vehicle demands more of your brakes, so it’s best to keep a lighter load. This is best for safe driving and increasing the lifespan of the braking system.

Schedule a Professional Inspection

Besides taking these precautions, if you notice any issues with your brakes, it is best to schedule an inspection. Doing so can lengthen how long your brakes last, for maintenance is key. Take a look at some of the main signs of brake issues in the infographic below.
